Cisplatin, Chemotherapy and Mesothelioma

Cisplatin is part of a group of medications referred to as alkylating agents. It is a kind of platinum-based chemotherapy drug that is used in the treatment of a wide variety of cancers, including sarcomas and lymphomas, among others. While cisplatin alone was not an effective treatment for malignant pleural mesothelioma, it has proven to be quite beneficial when combined with other chemotherapy drugs, such as Alimta®.

Cisplatin is no longer protected under patent. There is no company that has an exclusive right to manufacture it. Being off-patent, cisplatin can be made by any reputable drug company that is able to meet all government-approved safety regulations. Until 2012, Bristol-Myers Squibb had exclusive rights to cisplatin, and marketed the drug under the names Platinol® and Platinol-AQ®. Cisplatin is sometimes referred to as CDDP, short for cis-Diamminedichloroplatinum.
