Pericardial mesothelioma is a very rare form of cancer affecting the lining of the heart. It is one of the least common forms of mesothelioma, a rare disease. Awareness of mesothelioma has increased in the years since it was attributed to long-term use of asbestos. Asbestos products are very common in our industrialized society. Current diagnoses of mesothelioma are often traced back to exposure that occurred decades ago.
The known varieties of mesothelioma by location in the human body are:
Asbestos exposure is the only known cause of mesothelioma. Researchers have not been able to determine how asbestos fibers reach the lining of the heart in the rare cases of pericardial mesothelioma. Research studies have reported that a number of pericardial mesothelioma patients also had pleural mesothelioma, and asbestos exposure was identified as the trigger in those cases.
One often-cited study, published in 1994, stated that, “The role of asbestos exposure as a causative factor in the development of pericardial mesothelioma is not certain, but asbestos exposure has been documented in a few patients.” (Primary malignant mesothelioma of the pericardium: case report and literature review, by R Thomason, W Schlegel, M Lucca, S Cummings, S LeeTex Heart Inst J. 1994; 21(2): 170–174.
