For decades, men and women signed up for the Navy without knowing how their service would affect their health years later. Across the country, veterans of the Navy are getting sick and dying from lung cancers and asbestosis that can be linked, often, to working in ships with asbestos-laden materials.
Over the years, a town in Montana has suffered the devastating effects of asbestos exposure. The town has spent over $370 million on cleaning up the toxic materials, and the project is still years from completion. About 400 people have died and 1,750 have been sickened as a result of the toxic exposure to asbestos.
While asbestos is a widely-known, potentially toxic material, not many people know exactly what it is, what it is used for and what sort of risks are involved when asbestos exposure occurs.
