How Does Cisplatin Treat Mesothelioma?

Cisplatin is a chemotherapy drug. It is part of a category of drugs called alkylating agents that are used in cancer patients as a way to slow the growth of or kill cancer cells and tumors. Also referred to by the names Platinol® and CDDP, cisplatin was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1978 for the treatment of many different types of cancer. It was arguably the most important cancer treatment breakthrough of its time.

Cisplatin works by eliminating the ability of certain cancer cells to duplicate their DNA, making it impossible for the cancer to grow. The manner in which the DNA strands are damaged begins a process called apoptosis (cell death) which is a naturally occurring process that causes the cells to die without the release of harmful substances into the body.
