Administering Cisplatin

Fighting mesothelioma is something that never crosses the minds of most people. Even people who worked in high-risk industries likely never gave it a second thought. When the diagnosis is delivered, however, countless unanswered questions come to mind and the need for information about treatment options becomes immediately urgent.

Chemotherapy is almost always a key component in every mesothelioma treatment regimen, and almost everyone has heard stories about, or witnessed firsthand, the sometimes debilitating side effects that usually come with it. Fighting cancer is one of the most stressful situations victims will ever have to face, and the stress is often compounded when they can't find answers to their questions.

Working to Provide the Information You Need About Cisplatin Treatments

Cisplatin is a chemotherapy drug that is used to treat many different types of cancer. For many years, Bristol-Myers Squibb marketed cisplatin under the names Platinol® and Platinol-AQ®. As a treatment for mesothelioma, cisplatin is often used in combination with another chemotherapy drug, such as Alimta®.

When patients receive cisplatin treatments, the drug is delivered intravenously, or through an IV. The Alimta® portion of the treatment typically comes first and usually takes about 10 minutes. Patients then take a 30-minute break before proceeding with the cisplatin treatment. Completing the cisplatin IV normally takes approximately two hours. For mesothelioma patients, this process takes place once every three weeks.
